A Rich History
Leverington Cemetery was originally the 1690s farm of Wigard Levering, pioneering settler of land granted to William Penn in 1681. After 1744 it was known as the “Roxborough Burial Ground.” In 1857, it was incorporated as the Leverington Cemetery Company.
Within these hallowed grounds lie many early permanent settlers of Roxborough, including the Levering family, eighteen Virginia Patriots massacred in Roxborough during the American Revolution, many Civil War soldiers, and numerous ordinary people who did extraordinary things.

Richard Harding Davis
Leverington Cemetery is the final resting place of Richard Harding Davis (1864-1916), one of the most celebrated figures in journalism at the turn of the 20th century, who is credited with aiding Theodore Roosevelt’s rise to prominence. He covered nearly every major war during his career, reporting for William Randolph Hearst’s New York Journal, Joseph Pulitzer’s New York Herald, The Times of London, and Scribner’s Weekly, as well as many other newspapers and magazines. His writing had a flair for the dramatic, and at times a romantic or humorous style. He also wrote fiction, including Gallegher and Other Stories, a fictionalized account of his days as a copy-boy for the Philadelphia Public Ledger, and the novel Soldiers of Fortune.
